General Summary
We first came to the Mývatn in the north many years ago area and soon realised that it is one of Iceland’s premier photographic locations due to variety, diversity and uniqueness of the many photographic subjects. We’ve scheduled two departures for this brand new photography holiday, both around Easter-time, although daffodils and frolicking bunnies will be in short supply for this is still Winter in Iceland and you can expect a weird, wonderful snowy landscape with geothermal activity, frozen lakes, wacky lava formations, ice encrusted waterfalls, a superb lava ice cave and to top it off several opportunities to capture the northern lights; apparently experts have forecast that in 2012 we can expect some spectacular displays. We will stay in warm, comfortable guesthouse accommodation right in the midst of some of the best photographic locations in Iceland. Expect some magical winter shots and one to one tuition both in the field and post processing.

Day 1: Arrival and transfer
Transfer from International airport to Reykjavík domestic, take late afternoon flight north to Akureyri. Transfer to hotel close to Lake Mývatn.
Days 2-7: Northern light locations
Our base is central and close to all locations affording the flexibility of making on the spot decisions about where and when to photograph, we will be guided by variables such as the weather, snow cover, ice formations, sunrise and sunset, aurora forecasts and participants energy levels. Late afternoon on Day 7 we drive to Akureyri airport for the flight to Reykjavik.
Goðafoss
One of the most impressive waterfalls in Iceland.
Northern Lights
The area around Reykjahlíð is especially fine for photographing the Northern lights, reflections of the Aurora cast on a frozen Lake Mývatn are especially photogenic.
Jarðböðin
North Iceland’s own Blue Lagoon a great way to relax and catch the Northern lights at the same time.
Dimmuborgir (dark castles)
Weird lava formations that make for a really unusual landscape when combined with the snow.
Lofthellir Lava Cave
Expedition in a snow-going jeep through snow and a surreal volcanic landscape to a cave displaying the greatest natural ice sculptures currently known in an Icelandic lava cave.
Hverarönd
Surreal and colourful, a geothermal landscape bursting with mud pots, steam vents, sulphur deposits, boiling springs and fumaroles.
Pseudo craters
Crater groups on the shore formed by steam explosions as glowing lava poured into Mývatn; ideal subjects for some very graphic and unusual landscape images
Lake Mývatn
During the winter most of the lake freezes over and we can wander out onto the ice often encountering fishermen making holes to fish for trout in the icy depths.
Hverfjall Crater
In winter this snow-covered crater dominates the village skyline; it is possible to walk to the rim for some really wild and different aerial shots of the surrounding landscape.
Other Location Possibilities
All of our potential locations are too numerous to mention in detail including icelandic horses, an underground cave with a geothermal pools, lava fissures that are still steaming, the local lava ovens where bread is baked and bricks fired.
