David ‘Cubby’ Cuthbertson
Dave ‘Cubby’ Cuthbertson, universally known as Cubby is a professional photographer and international (IFMGA) mountain guide. His work in the media and mountain guiding has taken him worldwide. As one of our regular photographic guides in Iceland, Greenland and Lofoten, Cubby is an empathetic and knowledgeable photographic tutor with a lovely sense of humour.
Whilst he always carried a camera, it was not until the late 90’s that he founded Cubby Images and started working as a professional photographer. Whilst Cubby will always pursue an opportunity to photograph climbers in action his real passion is creating landscapes. He retains a deep and lasting connection to his old climbing haunts in Glencoe and the Highlands of Scotland, describing his photographic work as classical but significantly retrospective of his climbing years.
“When composing a scene I do sometimes reflect on my climbing past; formative years pitted against the diverse and often extreme elements of Scottish Mountains. My nostalgic connection with this landscape has given me so much and has created an inseparable, spiritual bond. For me this deeply instinctive and sub-conscious connection is often the final stage in my journey before completion of an image.”
Cubby is part of a small elite team specialising in providing safety and rigging for the film industry in extreme locations such as Greenland and the Himalayas including Everest. Many will have read or seen the epic film ‘Touching The Void’ Cubby both filmed and played something of a starring role by doubling for Joe Simpson, thus re enacting one of the most famous falls in climbing history!
Cubby’s work has featured in the popular climbing and outdoor magazines with many front covers to his credit. His landscape and climbing images also feature in numerous books. Clients include Berghaus, Vango, Rab, Vodafone and Red Bull.
